messenger 2009 version

been using messenger since 2005 but now I have this version and having
problems with it.Uninstalled it and downloaded version 8.5 but got an error
message Code 0x8000ffff description Catastrophic failure.
Running windows XP home edition, put windows 2009 back but cannot get new
emotions or winks, only need the chat and none of the extra stuff that comes
with it ,IE hotmail account, this version does not seem to be as secure as
the 8.5 version.
Any suggestions, thanks

Hi Kelly,

This is because you still have other Windows Live Essentials Component
installed. If you only removed Messenger 2009, you'll get this error message.

Go to your control panel then remove ALL Windows Live clients then try
re-installing the 8.5 version.

this problem is due to the Office XP SP3 update:

You might see if the following search yields anything relevant to your

There is, for example, at least one "hotfix" for a similar problem (error is
not identical) in Windows 2000. So, a lot would depend on what version of
Windows you're running.
