Messenger 7.0 stopped working with Vista

I found recently that after a year of using Messenger 7.0.0820 for XP on
Vista I can no longer log in, getting a message about needing to upgrade to
a newer version.

7.0.0820 still works fine on XP. Why does it no longer work on Vista? I've
spent a couple of hours searching for an announcement and the closest I can
find is a comment from Jonathan Kay (in "webcam security" thread) that
someone can use 7.0.0820 as long as it's not on Vista.

Greetings,

To be honest, it's been awhile since this has come up, so I can't really remember the exact
reasons, but only Windows Live Messenger 8.1+ is supported on Vista. All previous versions
of Messenger, including MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger, do not work properly.

If I recall there's some display issues with the toasts, voice/video doesn't work properly
and possibly other things in MSN Messenger on Vista.

It's only in the past week or so that it's refused to log in. Today I used
7.0.0820 on a Windows Server 2003 machine that I don't use that often, and
the same thing happened. I fixed that by setting Windows 2000 compatibility
mode in the properties for msnmsgr.exe (it didn't occur to me to try that
with Vista).

Hi,

It shouldn't happen on Win2k3, however officially the server versions of Windows aren't
supported by Messenger, but it's probably just a mis-configuration on their end (it's
happened before).
