I was running Messenger 8.1 under Windows XP Media Centre Edition I did the
upgrade to Vista Home Premium and it kept coming up saying messenger had to
close whenever messenger tried to start.

So I uninstalled and reinstalled messenger 8.1 and the same problem... so I
searched the net and it said messenger 8.0 would work so I reverted back to
that and it works.

However my brother has Vista and is using messenger 8.1 question is why
doesn't it work in Vista on my machine only 8.0 does?

Greetings,

More than likely what's happened is a problem in your Messenger client cache which is in a
different location in 8.1 than in 8.0 (hence why one works and one doesn't).

To check, click Start and type the following:
%appdata%\..\local\microsoft
then hit Enter.

Rename the Messenger folder to something else (Messenger old or something) and then install
8.1.

I can't rename the folder as it says destination folder access denied.. you
need permission to perform this action... I am logged in as Nick Le Lievre
and it is Nick Le Lievre > appdata > local > microsoft why haven't I got
permission? I`ll try and do it logged in as administrator

Hi,

If you don't have permissions to that folder, that could be part of the issue.

If you look at the properties of the folder, Security tab, then Advanced, then Owner tab,
then Edit button, you should be able to give yourself ownership and add yourself to the
access list.

In Vista, simply using Admin usually doesn't help with the default permissions.
