Messenger 8.1 not reconised

i have xp sp2 with messenger 8.1 installed when i try to connect to another
computer via remote assistance with my windows messenger 8.1 i get an error
message saying i dont have the latest version of windows messenger and have
to go to the windows website to get it via a web link, is 8.1 the latest
version or is my computer having a laugh. A Boden U.K.

You may have have Windows Live Messenger v8.1 but you don't have Windows
Messenger v8.1 installed. They're not the same; you need the latter.

PS: This has nothing to do with Windows Update.
