Messenger 8.5 keeps installing

LS,

after every reboot, Messenger Live 8.5 does not automatically open but
starts an installation procedure after which the normal login screen opens
and Messenger can be used normally.
How to prevent undesired installations upon Windows reboot?
By the way, this behaviour started after installation of several updates for
Windows.

Greetings,

In a lot of cases, simply uninstalling Windows Live Messenger from (Add or Remove) Programs
in the Control Panel and then reinstalling it will correct this.

If not, come back and there are some slightly more in depth ways to fix this. What's
happening is the Windows Installer has detected a change to the configuration when Messenger
was installed and attempts to "heal" itself by reinstalling itself. Obviously this is
failing and it's just going in circles (which isn't that rare of a situation sadly).

Jonathan,

you are quite right; uninstalling and subsequent reinstalling did cure this
issue.
Thanks for your valuable suggestion.

Greetings,

Can you describe your issue a little more in detail with exact error message(s) that you're
receiving? I suspect what you're seeing is a bit different than the original post if a
uninstall/reinstall did not fix the problem.

I'm having the same issue. I had to reformat my hard drive on the weekend and
have installed, removed and reinstalled windows live messneger 4 times and
each time I restart it tries to reinstall itself. What is the more "in-depth"
way of fixing this please.

Thanks in advance.

Greetings,

The first "in depth" way is to use the Windows Installer Cleanup utility, which you can find
here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

After installation, just run, find Windows Live Messenger on the list and choose Remove.
Then install Live Messenger again.
