Greetings,
It could be that the backgrounds store has been corrupted. Try this tool to see if they're
still accessible, if they are, back them up using the tool:
http://www.baisoft.it/msnbackup_english.asp
If they're not there continue on.
Then, shut down Messenger by right-clicking on its icon in the notification area and choosing
Exit. Click Start, then Run, type
"%appdata%\microsoft\msn messenger" and click OK. Then find the folder associated to your
account (if you need to find the ID, see:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/msngrid.aspx). Then right-click the Backgrounds folder
and choose Rename. Rename the folder to "oldbackgrounds". Then go back into Messenger so
that it can recreate the default backgrounds.
Now, if you managed to save the Backgrounds using the tool, you can then go back into the
tool and restore them. If not, go back into that oldbackgrounds folder from before, rename
each of the files in that folder to the PNG extension and you'll have to readd each one
manually into Messenger. If you don't see the file extensions, just click the Tools menu
within the folder, then Folder Options, choose the View tab and uncheck 'Hide extensions for
known file types'.
