Messenger disconnects from internet

I decided to download and install Microsoft Live Messenger today. After the
installation, it would not log onto my msn account AND it closed my internet
connection. I rebooted, tried again and the same thing happened. I
uninstalled messenger 8.0, reset the modem, and all was fine (except my 7.5
was gone).

Tonight I tried to download and install 8.0 again and exactly the same thing
happened. I uninstalled again, rebooted and all is well.

So the only messenger I have at this point is 4.7. My 7.5 is gone, and I
cannot figure out how to install 8.0 to work. Any help would be
appreciated. Thanks.

System: P4, 512 ram, 128 meg video, 40 gig free hd, ie 6.0.

Windows version? An entry in your HOSTS file may be causing the problem,
Claire.

You may be confusing Windows Messenger v4.7, MSN Messenger and Windows Live
Messenger: The latter is the next-generation version of MSN Messenger and
installing it will remove MSN Messenger v7.5 (which is no longer available
for WinXP et al.).

Installing Windows Live Messenger v8.0 does not affect your install of
Windows Messenger v4.7 and higher
(http://www.microsoft.com/windows/messenger/), which has different features.

Yes, the similar names are very confusing, but then so are Windows Live
Mail, Windows Live Mail Desktop and Windows Mail (in Vista). <wink>

Using WinXP.

An interesting thing happened this morning. I tried to open my msn browser
and it told me that I must have messenger installed so I told it to install
it. It installed version 7.0 and that works perfectly. So I now have 7.0
and 4.7.

I guess I'll just have to settle for this at this time. It does give me an
error that I can recreate so it isn't just a fluke or bad installation.

Thanks for your help.

WinXP, WinXP SP1 or WinXP SP2?

The fact that you were offered MSN Messenger v7.0 leads me to believe that
the machine is not fully up-to-date at Windows Update, Claire, and that
Automatic Updates isn't enabled.

Either that or her MSN Client is too old to support the new version of
messenger. What is the version number of your MSN Client?

SP2, automatic updates enabled. It does have one problem - 2 updates for
NET framework are awaiting installation because SP2 messed up the NET
framework (at least that is what microsoft says). I tried to follow their
repair instructions and hit a snag and never got back to it.

I was offered 7.0 through MSN Premium, not on the microsoft update page.

I'll try to do the NET framework repair again - that could possibly be
causing this problem. I have one of the very early upgrades to XP - bought
the first week of release.

Thanks for all of your help!
