Actually the original versions of Messenger did allow you to log into AIM and talk to your
AIM contacts. Unfortunately AOL fought back against this and Microsoft had to constantly
update the Messenger client to "get around" AOL's attempt to lock them out. Eventually
Microsoft gave up.
I don't believe they've ever released the numbers, but I'm sure AIM is a profit grosser for
AOL and wouldn't be willing to open up to others at this point.
