Messenger freezes for 15 secs on sign in

Hi all,

I have tried MSN Messenger 7.5 first, then Windows Live Messenger Beta, and
with both I have this problem which only started a week ago:

When Msgr is in the process of signing in, it becomes unresponsive for
around 15 seconds, but sometimes longer. I cannot move the window,
right-click the icon, etc.

Once it is responsive, *sometimes* when someone messages me, it again
freezes for up to 1 minute, then works.

Obviously some sort of connection issue, but nothing has really changed with
my connections. I have:
Belkin Router with UPnP enabled
Cable modem
WinXP Pro SP2 with all the latest updates

I have tried a full uninstall of Msgr, deleting its folder and registry
entries, rebooting, then reinstalling - more than once.

Is anyone able to help solve this?

Just curious, but how fast is your system? I've begun experiencing the same
problem, but only because my system is currently going through a painful
death (motherboard AND hard drive are both failing). Make sure you haven't
installed any memory-intensive programs during that last week.

Hi Michael

I don't think it's a system speed issue. I have a Sony Vaio PCV-RZ322 with
2.79Ghz Intel processor, 1GB RAM, 10GB free HD space, 2Mb broadband, etc.

Does yours freeze for up to 60 seconds sometimes when starting a new
activity with a contact, e.g. file transfer, or even just chat?

I wonder if anyone else here has any ideas?

I have also found posts from people with the same problem, all ignored or
unsolved, on Google Groups.

What is the best way to have someone from MS take up the lead on this thread
and find a solution pronto, do you reckon?

Surely someone is able to find a fix.

I have noted it does not occur in Safe Mode with Networking.

What else do you guys have running? I have:
Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (update rollup 2)
Skype
Outlook
AVG Free Anti-virus
ActiveSync
M-Audio FireWire 410 Control Panel
NVIDIA G-Force Graphics card
Kodak EasyShare driver
UPnP Enabled and connected to Belkin Router
Windows Defender

Perhaps we can find a common culprit?

I've got a almost clean install on my PC. I've only installed a few games and
applications.

I've discovered that MSN Messenger 7.0 dosn't freeze. You should try it.

But one of the applications I have installed is Office 2003, and when I want
to see an email it freezes. Just like Messenger.

Greetings,

There are a number of reasons this could be happening. Firstly, at least some delay is
normal -- if you actually stick with the 8.0 beta, it has a significant improvement in its
contact caching system which makes logins a lot faster, however you have to logon several
times before the cache is built properly to see the increase.

Secondly, the router could be at fault, you might want to check to make sure you have the
latest firmware.

Hi, interesting that you have issues with Office. I don't have that issue,
but often when trying to click a URL contained in an e-mail, things freeze
for 30-45 seconds, and then IE opens with the web page. Do you get that
too?

Anyone know about that issue?

This was a definite, sudden problem that was introduced a few weeks ago when
using 7.5. It is not just a caching delay. E.g. is it normal when someone
starts typing a message, for their message to flash in my taskbar, but when
I click it for the window to open, completely blank (not fully drawn) and
freeze that way for up to 45 seconds? I am convinced there is another issue
at play.

I certainly do have the latest. I have to say I only get this issue with
Messenger, so the router seems otherwise fine.

I hope you are able to consider what other kinds of things could cause this.
According to Banzai it is not an issue with 7.0.
