Messenger hangs after about 20 minutes

I have the latest version of Live Messenger along with the latest version of
Plus. However, after 20 minutes or so of not utilizing it, when I go back to
it, and try to change my status it does not respond and when sending a
message to a contact, the contact does not see my message. How can I fix it?
