Messenger hangs for a while when a contact is invited to mass chat

I'm having a problem with bigger conversations (5+ contacts).

When a contact is invited to or exits from a chat, WLM hangs for a period
which is in direct proportion to the number of people in the chat. One or two
other users have the same problem. I can receive messages, but they're not
displayed until the WLM unfreezes.

Most users in my contact list do not have this problem.

I don't have this problem on all computers, f.e. on a W2K3 TS server @ work
everything is fine and messenger continues to work. The WLM build on both
machines is; 8.1.0178.00. The OS on my laptop(1GB ram, 3.2GHz) is WinXP with
all patches installed.

The installed virusscanner is ESET NOD32. uninstalling it doesn't make a
difference
I have an ISA 2006 server as firewall in place on a Windows 2K3 server, both
at home and at work. Connecting my computer directly to the modem doesn't
change a thing. I've tried almost everything short of reinstalling my laptop
(which is not an option). Is there anyone that has a suggestion to solve this
problem?

The problem is the message archiving/logs. Every time someone leaves and exits, all the XML
files for every person have to be loaded, parsed, and saved.

Until this is completed, Messenger appears to "freeze".

Other's are seeing it either because they have the feature off or their logs aren't as big as
yours.

If this is a big issue for you, I'd suggest discontinuing the use of the built-in Messenger
logs and using Messenger Plus for a message history instead (http://www.msgpluslive.net).
