Greetings,
1. Windows Live Messenger 8.0 was released on June 19th of this year, and an update to that
on August 10th. There is a Windows Live Messenger 8.1 in beta currently
(
http://ideas.live.com if you're interested in trying it out).
2. Yes you can do this in WL Live. You just right-click a contact on the contact list and
choose Add a nickname.
