Are you using a router? If so, which kind and model is it?
Messenger uses Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) in order to establish direct connections for
file transfers and when this fails, you'll get slower transfers as it has to funnel the
transfer through the Messenger server.
Depending on what router you're using, you may have simply "run out" of UPnP port forwardings
but I'll save the solution for that dpending on your reply.
