Messenger Live + Vista

Since using Vista and Messenger Live any file transfer takes forever. They
are beyond slow! No firewall blocking. All other uploads and downloads are
extremely fast as I have a cable 6mbps connection.

Can someone help?

This is correct and there is nothing that can be done about it, unless
you are willing to pay more for faster upload speeds from your ISProvider.

When you doing a direct upload or download between friends through
Windows Live Messenger or any other Instant Messenger program, you are
governed by the upload speed allowed by your ISProvider when uploading. When
you are downloading from your friend you are governed by his or her
ISProvider's upload speed.

Thanks for the info, however I used to get pretty fast transfers rates with
XP before the OS change. And I do have pretty quick uploads speeds, as it
stands, its 700kbps for uploads. I don't think this is an ISP issue.
Nothing has changed except the OS and the new version of WLM.

Greetings Josh,

Are you using a router? If so, which kind and model is it?

Messenger uses Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) in order to establish direct connections for
file transfers and when this fails, you'll get slower transfers as it has to funnel the
transfer through the Messenger server.

Depending on what router you're using, you may have simply "run out" of UPnP port forwardings
but I'll save the solution for that dpending on your reply.

If you achieve a P2P connection between your PC and the remote PC, you may
be subject to bandwidth throttling. Some ISP's limit the speed of such
transfers at different times of the day in favour of other higher priority
data transfers such as http and email. You might be able to switch to
another package with your ISP to improve things, or switch to another ISP,
preferably one that doesn't stamp on P2P. Your remote contacts may also need
to do the same.

You're also behind a different firewall with Vista than XP which I've
noticed slows things down too and more than the XP version. I disabled
Vista's firewall and am using another firewall. Maybe it might be the same
for you - try a test with the firewall disabled temporarily.

That's all fine and dandy ... but this only started with Vista ... I have a
cable connection .. checked with the provider and they are not limiting my
upload bandwidth. Transfers with XP were super quick ...
