Windows Live Messenger (any version from 7 to current) does not launch - it
appears in my Windows Task Manger under processes tab (but not applications
tab) as msnmsgr.exe, and a messenger icon appears in the quicklaunch area
with a little 'x' icon but no Messenger window appears at all. When I
rollover the quicklaunch icon it disappears. Using XP, up to date.

read here my prior post... disable these services
>>>>>>

Hello... I had trouble with the icons in the tray during boot..

some never showed, especially messenger....

after some googling.. I found out that if I disabled the sspd and unpnp
services
the icons in the tray would show perfectly!!! Indeed that solved the
problem.

Made no difference. Not a matter of the icons not showing in system tray but
of the Messenger app not appearing at all when launched.

Try this: Open your registry editor (go to Start> Run... - and type "regedit"
then naveigate to and delete the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MSNMessenger\ Policies

That should do it!

That key does not appear in that path of the registry. There is no key named
"Policies".

I had the exact same problem and in my case I could fix this by disabling my
laptop's built-in webcam in the Device Manager. But I am running Vista and
the drivers were for Windows XP, so I don't know if you are experiencing
something similar.
