messenger runs like a lame dog

Since installing messenger 8.0 build 8.0.0812.00 i am unable to chat in any
meaningful way because messages are taking up to 13 minutes or more to be
delivered to and from my contacts. What is going on? How can I fix it?

Running XP Pro SP2 and all updates.
