This was posted on the Messenger Support page earlier, but has since been edited
to state the the problem was resolved, so it would appear that there was a
server side error that was fixed some time on 10/16 causing the error for some
people.
The post below is for reference only! I am not suggesting that it should be
performed for any other errors as it may cause Windows Live Messenger to stop
functioning properly.

For Windows Live Messenger 8.1

You see the sign-in error 8004882c.

Warning: The steps below involve changing registry values. Before modifying the
registry , please refer to this KB on how to backup, restore and edit registry

For Windows Live Messenger 8.0, do the following:

1. Click on START and RUN and type in REGEDIT and hit Enter to open the registry
editor.

2. Click on HKEY_CURRENT_USER, followed by Software , followed by Microsoft ,
followed by MSNMessenger and select the Policies key.

3. Delete the Policies key.

4. Restart the machine.

5. Sign into Windows Live Messenger .


For Windows Live Messenger 8.1, do the following:

1. Click on START and RUN and type in REGEDIT and hit Enter to open the registry
editor.

2. Click on HKEY_CURRENT_USER, followed by Software , followed by Microsoft ,
followed by Windows Live , followed by Communciations Clients , followed by
Shared, and select the Policies key.

3. Delete the POLICIES key.

4. Restart the machine.

5. Sign into Windows Live Messenger .

The reg file would've deleted that too, and obviously that isn't working for everyone.
