messenger virus

is there another one going around? I just got a link for someone with the
message of omg I can't believe you could be so cheap and the link to a
my-secret-gallery.download.com I am wondering how it is happening though as
he said the last time I talked to him that he would be back in a week.. and
just got that message today :s so I am wondering if it is something on his
comp or mine.

In the interest of making SURE what you are experiencing:

Is this a message you are receiving within a continuously running
instant messenger pane or a pop-up window labeled "Messenger Service"?

What is your Windows version and service pack level?

Are you using and have active fire wall software (third party or the one
that comes with some versions of Windows)?

Is your internet access dial-up or broadband? IF broadband, is the
computer connected directly to the broadband modem or through a router
(terminals/computers/connection ports at workplaces, colleges, web cafes
and libraries are usually connected through a router).

The link is comming through in messenger as a conversation window like they
do if they send you a regular message.I have had problems with these links
before but that has been because others have had viruses on their computers.
I am also wondering if this has anything to do with the spam message that
was sent as a network invite and I unchecked the box that said add to your
contact list and also chose to block the contact...

I am running on Windows Xp Service pack 3 and IE 8
currently running windows firewall and on a DSL modem and yes it is
connected directly.

Hi Skywolfe,

There are thousands of these that have existed forever. What you saw is not unusual at all -
they are always "going around".

It's either on his computer or he gave his username and password to a phishing site which is
now using it. I did a full blog entry on this last month which goes into more detail and
what he should be doing:

Either way, just don't click on them and ignore. That's all you have to do to stay
protected.

that is what I wondered. he seems to have this alot and had a bunch of
malware on his comp not too long ago which malwarebytes and hijack this
found. the reason I was wondering id this one was new or not was the fact
that the address was a link to a download file what the name of the filw was
I am not real sure because it didn't show up on the conversation history in
recieved files. but it was something similar to this.
my-secret-gallery.download.com /download and had the name of the file. the
time of the malwarebytes detection I think he had a password change but it
still sent them out. thanks for the link. it helps alot.
