I and a couple of friends of mine had to go back to the 7.5 version because
our Windows Firewall pervented us from signing in.

Greetings,

The Windows firewall can't prevent you from signing in as it only blocks incoming ports --
signing into Messenger uses only outgoing ports which the Windows firewall can't touch.

Greetings missy,

A number of things could be causing this issue.

In the error that apologizes for the inconvenience of Messenger shutting down, click the
"click here" link -- in the next
screen, you'll see something like the
following: szAppName : msnmsgr.exe szAppVer : 8.0.812 szModName : rpcrt4.dll

If you could reply back with what the szModName has in your error, it could be helpful.

Its also possible that you put emoticons in your nickname, sometimes it
counts them as 2+ characters,. and you're only allowed to have a certain
amount - wlm + msn counts emoticons as 1 char when you type them.
