Microphone doesn't work in video call but does in voice call

Hi,

When I do a voice call in Windows Live Messenger, everything works
correctly. However, when I make a video call, everything is working, except
that the slider for my microphone is disabled (and is on 0), and the Mute
button doesn't work either (not that I'd like to mute it -- I'd like it to
be NOT mute).

What's wrong? Is the video call feature trying to use another recording
device than the voice call feature. I disabled all other recording devices
in Windows Vista, but this still isn't working.

Thanks,
--Szajd

I have to say, welcome to the group, there are a number of us with the same
problem, I've gotten 4 messages from Microsoft, and it's clear, at least to
me, they have no clue on how to cure the problem. If you do run across a
fix, please let the rest of us here about it.
Take care.

On a Dell D620 with SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio running Vista
Ultimate, the only way that I can get a video call to work in Messenger is
to use the internal microphone (headphones are optional). If I plug in a
microphone, I cannot be heard through it and the computer needs to be
rebooted. This is because (and, according to Dell tech support, this is
expected behavior) plugging in a microphone disables the internal one until
the computer is rebooted and merely unplugging a microphone will not turn
the internal one on again (seriously; in this day and age, the D620 cannot
detect that a microphone has been unplugged???).

In any case, for some reason, Messenger cannot use an external microphone in
a video call... Since (non-video) computer to computer calls with an
external microphone work just fine in Messenger, there is definitely a bug
within Messenger. However, it seems that there may be some issues with
Vista audio drivers as well.

I've tried both internal and external (Laptop Mic) with the same results -
it has to be messenger - both SightSpeed and Skype work perfectly, and under
Vista Premium. I stand by my first message.
Take care, try to keep the blood pressure down.

Considering these posts have been on the windows site for a week - and I'm
sure the problems have been around for longer, I am surprised there are no
solutions posted.

After taking the plunge to purchase Vista with a new PC, I have been most
disappointed with all the problems:
-- Microphone issues as above
-- Spelling check not working
-- Frequent error messages and inability to get windows help
-- Explorer dropping the internet connection (this could be hardware of
course, but in terms of the frustration value of facing these issues with a
new pc...)

Needless to say I am using my old pc to type this!!!

How do I get a refund for Vista??

All,

We've found the cause for an issue in Vista where the microphone/speaker
device will not work in Video Call (even though it works in Voice Call and
other applications).

For this particular issue, the work around is as follows:

- Launch the tuning wizard via Tools->Audio and Video Setup
- On Step 1: Speaker Setup, make sure the checkbox "Click here if you are
using headphones" is NOT checked.

We will be adding the fix into a future release.

Good to know that there is a work around - thank you! I'm sure that people
new to this problem will find it useful.

As for me, I uninstalled Vista and got XP instead - I feel much happier and
the pc has been behaving itself nicely.
