I bought a couple lifecam vx-1000s and hooked them up to our computers. One
works fine. The other seems to work fine everywhere but messenger. The
audio/video wizard works fine, but when you start a video call, the
microphone level and mute button are disabled. right-clicking and trying to
select mute does nothing. Ideas?

Try doing this:
1. Start Messenger;
2. Click Tools > Audio and Video Setup;
3. In Step 1 (Speaker Setup) select None and click Next
4. In Step 2 (Microphone Setup) select None and click Next
5. In Step 3 (Webcam Setup) select None and click Finish
6. Repeat this procedure from 1 to 5 selecting the correct speakers,
microphone and webcam.

No luck. the microphone volume control in the webcam window is still
disabled.

I'm having the same problem using Windows Live Messenger (WLM) with my new
Logitech QCP5000 (with Vista X64 software/drivers). I can perform the
audio/video setup in WLM but when I actually connect (video conversation),
the only thing that works is the video which is good. When I try to adjust
the slide bars (mic & speaker), WLM will not allow me. It's like they are set
to the very bottom (near mute) but you don't see the mute icon. If I use
audio only during the connection, I have no problems. I'm running WLM under
Vista x64 on clean install. Vista x64 installed WLM when I loaded the OS on a
new drive. Didn't get any errors with the OS or WLM. If I
uninstalled/reinstalled the same driver--the problem would go away until the
next time I powered up my computer.

Still no joy. I tried plugging in a labtec USB mic but it made no
difference. Any other ideas?

Well, I might as well join the club. I have the exact same issue. Brand new
Hp running Vista Ultimate (32). Same set up on my work computer and I have no
problem.
The home unit came pre installed with the symantic norton suite, I tried
disabling EVERYTHING no luck. I have reinstalled messenger and gone back to
8.0.
I have tried updating the sound card driver thinking it might have a conflict.
The last resort is to try HP service, been there done that and I am really
not looking forword to waiting 1 hour to speak to India and being told that i
need to reinstall my operating software.

There must be somthing simular in the set up in all of our boxes. Maybe we
should see what componates everyone is running. I have 3 boxes running Vista
and they seem fine with te web cam.

Another idea is to try another video mail softwre and see if that works,
does Gmail offer that?

Glenn,

I just reread your post, if you reinstall which drive ( the webcam) it
works? Or is that when you reinstalled on the other drive? Ifthatis the
issue it must be a driver conflict. What sound card are you using?

Well I went "borrowed" a different web cam from work and it works fine.
Looks like my issue was incompatibility between the MS Lifecam VX-1000 and
Live MSGR

Mike,

Are you saying that all you did was use a diffrent web cam and it now works?
If so what brand and does it have the integrated Mic?

Thanks
Eric
