Microphone problems

I have a Gateway P-6860fx that i think i got back in July or August. It
running vista 64. I have a mic that runs on my old computer that uses x
but wont work on this. Its plugged in and not muted. Under the recordin
tab it recognizes the mic and says its working but it doesnt pick u
sound. I think it uses IDT High Definition Audio CODEC and I googled i
and people seem to have run into problems with it but they all ha
dells

Anyone have any ideas with what is wrong
