Microphone wont work with Vista

I am using vista and cannot get the microphone to work with msn live
messenger. It works with everything else and was fine on XP. I have
searched the web without success other than I have seen other people with the
same problem - but no solution. I have reinstalled and even tried 8.5 beta
without success. Can anyone help?
