I use live messenger at home and think the live team are finaly onto creating
a truly wonderfull functional messaging application however they still
continue to develop their software with a blaten disregard for security most
of the features eg app sharing voice calls video calls ect simply wont work
from behind a forewall. Microsofts answer is simply to use a uPNP compatible
router what level of security do you have when applications have the ability
to open ports on the firewall for them selfs has microsoft forgotten about
such things as mass mailing worms and trogen vireses that thrive in their bug
ridden OS what is the piont of protecting your pc with a firewall when you
have to afectivly turn it off to use applications such as messenger thus
allowing any rouge software to use your machine as it see's fit another side
is i would like to use messenger in my office but i am limited as we use
microsofts ISA server as our firewall and microsoft them self will not
provide UPNP functionality in their firewall application but the solution for
their application problems is to use one. Sounds a little contradictory to
say the least. Other messaging and p2p client software on the market allow
you to specify a range of ports that are open on your fire wall and limit the
app to use those ports without any performance degredation. I was shocked to
learn that to configure my firewall for out bound phone calls i had to open
up ports 5004 - 65535 incomming udp good lord do the maths people with a hole
that big in your firewall why have one !! What do we as end users have to do
to get the likes of microsoft and give them a bloody big shake and say hey
stop producing such crap that only operates perfectly in your test labs and
give us the paying end users reliable and secure applications. For goodness
sake microsoft get out of your money making bubble and take a look at the
real world.. instead of charging heaps for security flaw dragnets git it
right take a look at your competitors product and ask why people are using
them maybe its because they are more secure. Dont get me wrong messenger is
evolving into a great product but the wrong end is evolving first make it
secure configurable and then feature rich. Lets see messenger 9 with a focus
on end user security.
