I wrote Microsoft support a question about the Validation on Windows
download center, as they write this in their FAQ:
<snip>
Q.
What information is collected from my machine?

A.
The genuine validation process will collect information about your
system, such as Windows product key, PC manufacturer, and operating system
version, to determine if Windows is genuine. This process does not collect
or send any information that can be used to identify you or contact you. The
complete list of information collected in the validation process is shown
below:

a.. OEM product key
b.. PC Manufacturer
c.. OS version
d.. PID/SID
e.. BIOS info (make, version, date)
f.. BIOS MD5 Checksum

</snip>

I asked them, what will happen if I upgrade my motherboard, as I then will
get a new BIOS, and my "file" at Windows downloadcenter will no longer
match. The answer was this:

<snip>

Hello,
Thank you for contacting Microsoft.com Customer Support regarding your
Windows Genuine Advantage Program question.
Currently Microsoft's Windows Genuine Advantage is a pilot program and is
not supported outside the online self-help and frequently asked questions.
If you would like to continue with your Windows Genuine download, you may
opt-out of the validation process at this time as the validation is
optional. To continue with your download, please go back to your desired
download and when prompted to validate Windows select "No, do not validate
Windows at this time, but take me to the download."

Microsoft Download Center Web site: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads
Microsoft Windows Update: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

We apologize for any inconvenience.

</snip>

I know this Validation is still optional, but now I have done it, and I'm
unsure what to do about it. Can anynoe here give some info about the
Validation on Windowsupdate / Windows download center. In short, Will my
"record" as Microsoft show PIRATE if I suddently has another BIOS? Microsoft
can not or will not answer. As I live in Denmark I have no option to phone
Microsoft and ask.

The OEM End User License for your existing computer will probably not be
valid if the motherboard is replaced with a new one. If you existing
Windows O/S is an OEM one, you should purchase a new Windows XP with the
new motherboard.
