If they did care:

*Microsoft Update would work. (It doesn't for me. See my last two
posts in this forum. They happened almost a month ago and no one seemed
to care at the time.)

*Automatic Updates would encourage users to use Microsoft Update rather
than the other way around.

*They would not wait for a handy Tuesday to release their security fixes.

Windows Update is the default but Microsoft is given as an easy option
if not already installed.
If Microsoft Update is installed, you need to look to disable since it
is not as visible.
Some do not want Microsoft Update and they would resent Microsoft
forcing that change if it were automatic.

When updates came out as available, many complained since at times,
they were always updating which had a significant impact on their
production.
For most businesses, the scheduled 2nd Tuesday was exactly what they
had asked for a long time.
This greatly simplifies their scheduling.
Microsoft can and does on occasion post an update out of cycle if
conditions warrant.

I have had no problems with updates for Windows XP. Microsoft has
chosen to release updates on the second Tuesday of each month, unless
a 'super critical' update is needed.

I don't use automatic updates at all, but I check them manually on
update Tuesday, or if I see comments in this group or the WindowsXP
help group about an update being released early.

I don't understand your second sentence, "Automatic Updates would
encourage users...."

1. Microsoft Update **was** working but is not anymore.
2. I don't think Windows Update works either. It was just reminding me
to upgrade to MU.

BTW: I don't see the business connection. What is to prevent MS from
releasing the update ASAP and allowing business to wait? Note they
would have to do so at their own risk!

Often the bad guys lack the information about a vulnerability to
exploit it.
Once the patch is released, to anyone, they get it and can start
reverse engineering to determine the vulnerability.
At the point of patch release, everybody becomes more vulnerable since
the vulnerability is more widely known to those wanting to take
control of your computer.
For that and other reasons, once a security patch is released, it is
to everyone's benefit to evaluate and install the patch immediately.

Microsoft received huge numbers of complaints almost every time a
patch was released since it was unpredictable and often a few days a
week.
That caused unacceptable interruptions to production for many.
Now the updates can generally be planned in advance thus improving
production.

No matter how Microsoft does it, there will always be some that prefer
it differently.

Hello to all,

I wonder why my fully up to date computers with different soft- and hardware
configurations are still running fine? Even with what most more advanced
users see as the most dramatic software you mght install: Norton Systemworks
2005 Installed

I have to admit that I skip anything that has to do with IE, because
installing it and really not liking it at all and so removing it the proper
way made me have to revive my windows setup the difficult way.

I have installed quite some systems and still regularry do so and update
them all and have hardly any problems, must be blind luck I guess? Or does
Micrososoft expect the user(s) to be a little more carefull like I am?

Anyway I forgot to mention I skip any driver update from MS and so far I
must say that XP is a little buggy but getting to know the bugs and the
workaround you can work fine with it: after 4 years I have made a clean
install and updated all and it works 99 % okay.

Best regards,
Michel Denie
