This is another E-Mail that Microsoft sent to me to help correct Error
number: 0x800A01AD. This is the second set of instructions to fix this
problem. I have not tried it yet, but I will be doing so tonight. Please let
me know if this helps anyone. If this works for me, I will post it as soon as
I finish trying all the instructions. You will need to print out these
instructions since it is rather long.

From our case log, I understand that the Automatic Update and the BITS
services does not work. We shall be working to resolve this specific issue
through the course of the case. If I have misunderstood your concern, please
let me know.
Based on my experience, the Automatic Update depends on the BITS seriveces.
Let's focus on the BITS issue first and this issue can occur because of many
causes. We may need some time to resolve this issue. Thank you for your
understanding.

Based on my research, the Background Intelligent Transfer service depends on
the services: Workstation and Remote Procedure Call (RPC).

At this point let's perform the following steps to restart it:

1. Click Start and click Run.

2. Type services.msc in the box and click OK.

3. Check the status of Workstation and Remote Procedure Call.

4. If they are stopped, right click it to choose Start. Otherwise, let's
right click background intelligent transfer service to choose Restart again.

2. Make sure you have following folder

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Network

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader

If the issue persists, I believe some system files have been damaged. I
suggest we repair Windows XP.

Before that, I suggest you backup the important file on C:\ to other places
such as another drive or a CD.

1. First make sure your BIOS is set to be able to boot from CDs (they
usually are). You should then insert the Windows XP CD media in your primary
CD-ROM drive and restart your computer.

2. Once the computer restarts you will see an option (right in the beginning
before Windows starts) to "Press any key to boot from CD..." At that instant
you should press any key (you have about 5 seconds).

3. You will see the Windows XP installation welcome interface, please click
Install Windows XP

4. Choose New Installation (Advanced) and then click Next

5. Mark I accept this agreement and then click Next

6. Enter your Product Key, click Next

7. Click Next to accept the default language and accessibility options.

8. Choose Yes to upgrade your drive to NTFS, otherwise, choose No. Click
Next to continue.

9. Please choose if you would like to download the updated setup file from
Microsoft Windows Update website and then click Next.

10. When your computer is restart, please select Windows XP Setup.

11. After you get the following three options, please press Enter not to
press R.

* To set up Windows XP now, press Enter.

* To Repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

* To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

12. After the next page appears, click R to repair your Windows XP

13. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the Setup procedure.
