Microsoft KB Article Numbers

I have some questions about the Microsoft Knowledge Base articles
naming conventions. Articles are named
as KB#####.

Is there any significance in the way the number is chosen. Does it
represent any information?

Can somebody tell from seeing the KB article numbers whether one
article was published prior to the other?

I have searched a lot on support.microsoft.com but could not find
anything.
