Opinion: I've seen several postings suggesting fixing the problems caused by
KB908531 by instructing users to make changes in their registry. In my
opinion this is not a good idea and there are probably millions of novices
that could end up getting themselves in real trouble. This is nearly as bad
as a computer virus. In fact, in a way, it is a computer virus.

I believe Microsoft needs to fix this problem ASAP or they are going to end
up with a black eye (remember Intel and the Pentium floating point math
problelm?)

They could begin by quickly issueing another update to undo the update that
installs KB908531.

They should then do whatever is necessary to get the problem fixed and then
re-issue the update.

I don't think the seriousness of this problem should be underestimated.

One can disable the HP Share to Web "service" from running at Startup by
using msconfig. No registry edits are needed.
After installing the update, one can then reenable it, if one so desires.

How to troubleshoot by using the System Configuration utility in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310560

The HP files are

hpgs2wnd.exe
hpgs2wnf.exe

Only for those that are having a problem with the update and only if it is
the update that is at fault. (and not some third party software with the
bug)

I see hpgs2wnf.exe in the taskmgr window but not on msconfig startup tab.
Should I disable it?

Yes! You may also want to try extracting the REG file contained in
http://patch-info.de/WinXP/Downloads...are-To-Web.zip
and import the REG file into the registry by double clicking on the
REG file.

I was wondering,... when you have an update sitting inside the update icon
on the taskbar how do you delete it?

Oh, I ment to delete (aka uninstall) Share-To-Web ;-)
If you don't want to, try the ZIP file I linked to in my previous
posting.

Wow! What a response. Max must work for Microsoft. His response proves my
point.
That is almost exactly the response Intel gave. "We'll fix it but only for
those that are having problems with it and we'll decide who those people
are". What you should be thinking of Max is the people who aren't have any
problem with it now and are unaware they have a little bomb waiting to bite
them when they do buy something from HP... a lot of that stuff is the in
pipeline you know. And the people who have already, or soon will, do damage
to their operating systems trying to "fix" the bug. And the people who will
spend good money to get somebody else to fix their machines for them.
