When i try to update .net framework on the windows update
website, i get the following error messages:

Error
Fatal Execution Engine Error (0x7926fcd8)

Sl 38.tmp- Common Language Runtime Debugging Services

Application has generated an exception that could not be handled

process id=xc5c(3164), Thread id=0xc64(3172)

click OK terminate the application

Any ways to fix this problem? (the error messages change
every time i try to update, i.e. the heading for the
second message will read something different like
SL23.tmp, SL5.tmp, etc. Also, the process and thread id
numbers will change).

LOL, I was trying to find an answer on the net and I found your post at
extreme tech support site and they told you to come here.
OK Q: are you on a domain network? Yes contact your IT department. NO
uninstall it you do not need it.

AFAIK "dot Net" has nothing to do with your connection method.
It is simply the programming language and libraries used to build
a ".Net application."

<title> Overview of the .NET Framework </title>
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/a4t23ktk.aspx

<title> What's New in the .NET Framework Version 2.0 </title>
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/t357fb32.aspx

(Google web search for
"Framework 2.0" runtime FAQ site:microsoft.com
)

Hence, what really determines whether a user would need this update or not
is whether they had any "dot Net" applications which used the new features
and would not run without it.
