Heck, I'd be using OpenOffice if I didn't have WordPerfect. Now that's
the real McCoy.

I'm sure Open Office saves in rtf or pdf format.

I am new to Windows Vista so pls bear with me if the question that i am
posting here is not logical....

1.Unfortunatley there is no Microsoft Office installed as part of my Desktop
package therefore i am not able to open Word (.doc) or Powerpoint slides from
my Email attachments.How do i resolve this issue ? I tried to save the word
attachment in my locak hard disk and then opened it using Wordpad .It had no
effect ...Any suggestions pls

Go to the MS download site and get the Powerpoint and Word viewers. You
can't create opr edit files with them, but you can read them.

Purchase MS Office or get the viewers as Not Me suggested.

Download Openoffice. It's free and can open word and powerpoint files.
Good MS Office alternative for home use.

errors that cause many grief. It's just not a good replacement for the real
McCoy if you have to share documents with the business world.

If all you want to do is type a term paper, save it to your computer and
then print the term paper - use Open Office. If you want to submit the file
to a professor for grading - prepare to have lower marks, if he even accepts
it in such form.

ms does have viewers you can download to accomplish that task. Another no
expense option would be to install OpenOffice.org - a full featured office
suite which will import and export ms office files.

Several points:

1. As you may know, Word and PowerPoint are not part of Windows Vista,
nor have they ever been part of any previous version of Windows.
Although some vendors may bundle such programs with computers they
sell, if yours didn't and you want these programs, you need to buy
them. If you want them both, the best way is to buy Microsoft Office.

2. Alternatively, if you just want to view these files, not create
them yourself, you can download free Word and PowerPoint viewers from
Microsoft.

3. If you want read *and* write .doc and .pps files, there are cheaper
alternatives to Microsoft Office, such as the inexpensive Corel
WordPerfect Office, and the freeware OpenOffice. These are
"compatible" with Microsoft Office, but be aware that such
compatibility is never perfect.

4. Over and above the preceding, be aware that opening file
attachments is one of the *most* dangerous things you can do with your
computer. Many attachments can carry viruses or other malware, and if
you open them, you can easily get infected.

You often see advice not to open attachments from people you don't
know. I think that that's one of the most dangerous pieces of advice
you see around, because it implies that it's safe to do the
opposite--open attachments from friends and relatives. But many
viruses spread by sending themselves to everyone in the infected
party's address book, so attachments received from friends are perhaps
the *most* risky to open.

Even if the attachment legitimately comes from a friend, it can
contain a virus. I'm not suggesting that a friend is likely to send
you a virus on purpose, but if the friend is infected without
realizing it, any attachment he sends you is likely to also be
infected.

Personally I never open executable attachments at all, except from a
*very* few trusted sources, and then only when I'm expecting them.
