Microsoft providing bad updates

This seems to be in the same vein as the VIA IDE update problems today. In
addition to the VIA IDE driver update, I also installed the "Alps - Other
Hardware - Alps Pointing-device" update - it was made available to me under
Windows Update.

Well, upon restart, my scroll wheel no longer worked. I had to rollback the
Alps driver and then restart to get it working again.

Why would 2 problematic (albeit optional) updates be released to the public?
I'm almost wondering if Windows Update is mistakenly supplying some
incorrect updates to certain machines configurations. Any thoughts on this
one?

I don't even have an Alps pointing device but it's in my download list too.

Ditto. It almost seems like it is for laptops, because after I installed it,
in the system tray there was an icon for a laptop touch-mouse-panel (whatever
you want to call it). Very weird that this would be an option for a PC...

I wouldn't recommed installing it
