This is what Microsoft sent to me for Error number: 0x800A01AD. This did not
work for me, but it may help someone else. Please let me know if this works
for you.

Based on my experience I have listed some resolution in the form of
suggestions so that it will be easier for you to try them. The instructions
provided below are a little lengthy but I assure you that those will
definitely resolve the issue for you. However, while attempting the
suggestions provided below if you experience any difficulties or anything
seems unclear to you, please write back to me and I will be glad to guide you
through the steps provided once again.

Note: If you are running Ad-aware or ZoneAlarm or PC-Cillin or Norton
Antivirus or Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall or
Proxomitron pop-up blocker or Ad Muncher or Web accelerator e.g.
"Slipstream", I would recommend you to Temporarily Disable or Shut down any
of these installed on your system and try accessing Windows Update site. Be
sure to enable them again when you complete the update process. If you can
access the Windows Update site with these applications disabled, then you may
need to add the Windows Update site to the applications exception, or ‘do not
block’ list. Please see the applications documentation on how to do this.

Suggestion 1:
=========
For your information, this issue might occur if the Automatic Updates or
BITS services is disabled or malfunctioning. To resolve the issue we will
have to enable the service or Stop and restart the service.

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. Type "services.msc" (Without the Double Quotes) and then click OK.
3. In the list of services, right-click on Automatic Updates and then click
Properties.
4. In the Startup type list, select Automatic and click Apply
5. Verify that the Service status is started, if the Service Status is
Stopped click on the Start Button. If the service is already started then
press Stop and then click on Start to re-set the service.

6. In the list of services, right-click on Background Intelligent Transfer
Service (BITS) and then click Properties.
7. In the Startup type list, select Automatic and click Apply
8. Verify that the Service status is started, if the Service Status is
Stopped click on the Start Button. If the service is already started then
press Stop and then click on Start to re-set the service.

9. Click OK.

Now try accessing the site to check whether the issue is resolved

Suggestion 2:
=========
If the error is still listed on the Windows Update Site then, the error
could also occur if the contents of SoftwareDistribution folder gets corrupt.
To resolve this issue we need to delete the contents of this folder. To do so
please follow the steps given below:

1. Click on Start, Run and in the Open box write
"%systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution" (Without Double Quotes) and press Enter.
2. It will open the SoftwareDistribution folder.
3. Delete all files and folders in the SoftwareDistribution folder
4. Reboot your system and once again try accessing the V5 Windows update
site and let me know if this resolves your issue.

Suggestion 3:
=========
If you are still encountering the above error then, the can also occur if
temporary internet files of Internet Explorer are not deleted or due to
caching of ActiveX objects or due to incorrect Security Settings. In order to
resolve this issue we need to perform general clean up steps provided below:

1. Click Start.

2. Click "Control Panel".

3. Double-click Internet Options.
4. Click "Delete Cookies" and select Yes to confirm.
5. Click "Delete Files" and select Yes to confirm.
6. Click Settings, click "View Objects". Delete all the objects in this
folder. If some objects cannot be deleted, please restart the computer and
try again.
7. Switch to the Security tab, select Internet and click "Default Level".
8. Click the "Custom Level" button.
9. Select "Enable" for all under the title "ActiveX controls and plug-ins".
10. Select "Enable" for all under the title "Scripting".
11. Click OK.
12. Switch to the Privacy tab, and click "Default" button.
13. Switch to the Advanced tab, click the "Restore Defaults" button and then
deselect the "Enable third-party browser extensions" option.
14. Click OK.

Now reboot your system and test the Windows Update Site and see if the issue
is resolved and let me know the result.

Lastly, if you are still encountering the above error on Windows Update
Site, then please try the next suggestion and see if that resolves the issue
for you.

Suggestion 4:
=========
We need to Remove invalid characters from the proxy exception list, clear
the proxy cache and then clear your proxy cache as this could be the cause of
the error to occur on Windows Update Site. To do this you can try the

2. On the Tools, select Internet Options.
3. Click on the Connections tab.
4. Click on the LAN Settings button.
5. Click on the Advanced button if its highlighted or else ignore the next
steps
6. Please delete any entry in the Exceptions section.

Next, clear your proxy cache.

1. Click on Start, and then click Run.
2. Type "CMD" (Without the Double Quotes) in the Open box to get a DOS
prompt.
3. Type "PROXYCFG -D" (Without the Double Quotes) at the command prompt,
and hitpress Enter.
4. Type "NET STOP WUAUSERV" (Without the Double Quotes) at the command
prompt, and hitpress Enter.

Hi,
I'm sure you can, you will just have to install the updates yourself. That
is easy to do. Hope this helps you.
