This is the 4 th day that I am trying to install my legal copy of windows xp
with server pack 1 built in,
After the new Microsoft server change with updates lets say I am half way
there with windows updates and I don't see any end to this.
I have low level formatted my drive, created new ntsf format for my new
windows xp installation, installed windows, installed virus scanner, not
connected to network yet, try to run those new lame ars updates after, I
updated my virus scanner,
have connected to network, went on line, authorized my lame MICROSOFT software
all good so far , wow, now first attempt to updates CAN NOT PASS this
retarded BITS 2.0 update, while runing the updates attempts guess what showed
up a
WIN32 VIRUT.A (virus) wow how nice I must be runing a super secure software
with most secure MICROSOFT SERVER , can someone reply to this one ??
what is happeing in recent days, I have done this hundred of times before
and never encountered a glitch !!!! .
Can someone here relate to my experience ???
What is the explenation on receiving the virus update ??
Maybe we are all forced to spend money again on a WINDOWS with Service Pack
2 built in ehh??

any help will be greatly appreciated, and sorry for smashing CAPS in here
but I am frustrated to the point of throwing my PC right with the Microsoft
windows out my balcony window onto a busy road hoping for a big rig truck to
hit it !!

My guess is you connected your computer to the internet without an active
firewall.
Without a firewall, as soon as you connected the computer to the internet,
your computer became vulnerable.
It matters not if you are surfing or not and has nothing to do with Windows
Update.

Your firewall MUST be enabled BEFORE physically connecting the cables to the
network:

Hey Jupiter, thank you for the reply,

to your reply,

I had my firewall enabled prior to connecting to lan,
but hey this was the MICROSOFT built in firewall, maybe thats why ehh,
I forgot that the windows firewall may not be that secure .....
I got the virus taken care off, it is just very strange as this had never
happend before, what about now the new windows update problems ??
I am using the same windows cd that I had installed and reinstalled many
times on my single machine. Why are the updates not working ??
Should I send my cd back to microsoft and request a new replacement copy
with the service pack 2 built it ??
After all I feel like they owe me money for my time lose, I have bought a
legal copy of microsoft windows xp and expect the server updates to be
flawless as they were before. I feel ripped off and screwed by microsoft, the
install procedure seems to be buggered on purpose to make you buy windows
with service pack 2.
Thank you microsoft for waisting 16 hours of my off work time, on trying to
install your brick dumb operating system, after all I find my cd nothing but
a garbage.

Yours trully unfortunate microsoft user.

The downside of the Windows firewall is that is does nothing for outbound
protection.
That means as long as your computer is clean, nothing is going out that you
do not already know about anyways.
If something is sending something out without your knowing, you have already
failed at least part way.
Inbound protection is fine.

If a virus, Trojan etc got on the computer it is more likely it came from
something you or someone else installed/restored other than Windows CD.

Another possibility is it was a false positive.
This is one reason why I usually disable anti virus while I install a
program I know is safe or while perform Windows Update which is also from a
secure site.

You can make a Windows XP with SP-2 using your Windows XP CD:
http://msfn.org/comments.php?id=9235...ght=slipstream
I suggest installing SP-2 before connecting to the network.

If you do not have SP-2 on CD, you can download and burn to CD or order the
CD, both options Step 1 on this page:

Andrew,

Can you please tell me how u got rid of the Virut.a Virus?

Thank you.

PS: Make sure you install on a clean drive without additional partitions. If
you have additional HDDs unplug them while installing XP and updating.
Win32/Virut and it's variants is extremely dangerous and if its on another
drive, it will load itself as soon as u boot XP.
