Microsoft service pack 2 update

I keep receiving a notice that my computer is ready for updates. I have tried
to up date but each time it fails Service pack 2 set up error.I keep getting
a notice, end now when I am on the internet , error, send error reports,
which I did last night, I receive a a notification form Microft that I need
to install the up dates, which I did it said it would take 160 mins to up
date, the update failed again. Can any one help? I need info on very basis
terms as I am new to computing.
