Microsoft Support for Incident Request

I'm wondering if anyone has a method of getting a more TIMELY response
from Microsoft Support. I submitted a request to
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527 and within 6
hours got a boilerplate response to try 3 procedures and email 3 files
of captured data to them if the 3 procedures failed. I accomplished
all that within 16 hours but I have heard no more from Microsoft
Support in over 2 1/2 days from the time of my last email. In the
meantime, I'm growing ever more concerned as I'm using my PC without
the May security update.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you.

Trish, send another email to support with your Incident number and chase it up.

What was wrong with the way Trish framed her question?

Taurarian managed to come up with a helpful suggestion.

Thank you, TaurArian. I had done that, first as an inquiry to the
person assigned to my incident and then, getting no response, to both
him and his supervisor. Since his first email to me had invited me to
provide feedback on their service to both of them - I did.

Finally I got a response at 8 pm this evening which doesn't even
acknowledge his prior email to me which conveyed the same info (plus
such gems as 1) try at another time or try restarting my PC and
reattempting the update; and 2) debugging info for a LAN connect -
when the SysInfo provided per his requestr indicated I use dial-up).
Nor did he acknowledge the fact that I'd already supplied the data
that he was again requesting of me.

Nor does he address the question I posed which, I think, by itself
would eliminate a lot of his suggestions as viable candidates: I have
NO trouble updating Office 2000. How can than be?

I'm NOT a happy camper. Thanks for letting me vent.

Carey,

I'm not sure if your complaint is that I didn't provide technical
details. If so, it was deliberate on my part. I felt I had exhausted
the ideas of those who were interested in helping me with my technical
problem (please refer to http://tinyurl.com/5xc7ez ) and I wanted to
appeal to a larger group of people for helping insolving my procedural
problem. I hope that makes sense.

Hi Trish, I understand your frustration but as your problem is not being able
to connect with the WU server and not an actual update, you are being shoved
aside by MS unfortunately.

We've tried everything known so far, now lets try:-

Clear out all your temporary internet files and cookies.

Reboot and try WU again. I'm hoping that there is corruption in the TIF area.

If that hasn't helped, please post the last 50 or so lines from the latest
attempt to update.

Also continue with your incident reports.

Thanks so much, TaurArian. I got the same results, but you offer

Okay, so you've flushed the proxy, added the sites to your trusted area, disabled anything
that could interfere and checked the firewall.

Clear your local proxy cache again .
1. Click on Start, and then click Run.

2. Type cmd in the Open box to get a DOS prompt.

3. Type proxycfg -d at the command prompt, and press Enter.

4. Type proxycfg -u at the command prompt, and press Enter.

Try again, if not then move on -

Now the next bit is grasping at straws but a poster said this worked for them when nothing
else did (no guarantees it will work for you) -

Re-register the WU components:

net stop wuauserv

regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
regsvr32 qmgr.dll
regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll

net start wuauserv

If you error out on jscript.dll don't worry about it.

Try again, if no joy -

Finally please rename the softwaredistribution folder

Renaming the SoftwareDistribution folder

Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.

Rename the "SoftwareDistribution" folder:
a. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%, and then click OK.
b. Right-click the SoftwareDistribution folder, and then click Rename.
c. Type SoftwareDistribution.old, and then press ENTER to rename this folder.

Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.

You'll lose your history but not important, if it don't work you can reverse the
procedure.

Reboot ..........

Try Again.

Hi TaurArian

I follow your procedure with mixed results. It looked quite hopeful
for a while!

I did proxycfg –d & got
Direct access (no proxy server)
I did proxycfg –u & got
Error writing proxcy settings. <87> The parameter is incorrect
Migration failed with error.. <87> The parameter is incorrect
Clicking the Express button terminated checking with an 0x80072EE2
================================================== =
Re-registering the WU components was successful, but update still got
an 0x80072EE2]
================================================== =
Stopping auto updates, renaming the distribution folder, starting auto
updates succeeded. Then clicking the Express button resulted in this
message: “To use this latest version of Windows Update, you will
need to upgrade some of its components. This version provides you with
the following enhancements to our service”

I did download & install and Windows downloaded the Windows Genuine
Advantage Validation Tool.

When the above download completed, Windows told me I needed Windows XP
Service Pack 3 (KB936929). I did download & install. It proceeded
for ~30 minutes, then reported the update wasn’t installed. It failed
with an 0x80072F78 code (much like the 0x80072EE2code?)

I retried, starting from the point of clicking the Express button and
got the original 0x80072EE2 code

I repeated the whole procedure above stopping AU, renaming folder,
starting AU, rebooting, and clicking Express. Again I got the sequence
above which terminates the SP3 download with an 0x80072F78 code

I'm posting the tail of my WindowsUpdate.log below.

Thanks as lot for all your efforts. I really appreciate this!

Trish
