Because our vendors will not certify windows xp2 we are going to deploy
windows xp with sp1a. Will microsoft continue to support updates without
sp2. Security updates. I know at some time it must expire.

Service Pack 1 support will be for quite some time:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifesupsps

Keep on your venders, since as time goes by, less and less will be available
for SP-1 or earlier.

If my memory is correct support for SP1 will be dropped within a few months;
well not support but windows updates. Microsoft has already reassign SP2 as
part of windows updates. Talk with your vendors about this issue. If they
are in any form of partner relation with Microsoft they should be pumping
out the latest Service Packs with all updates in their OEM products.

But what if a vendor doesn't come up with SP2 compatible drivers?

Microsoft is still selling XP licences to OEM/PC builder Medion
(Medion.com - Germany),
although Medion stubbornly refused me to provide SP2 compatible
propriety hardware drivers for a machine that is only 3 y.o.
(it came with a licenced XP home OEM preinstalled and on CD, pre-SP1)

Does MS know that some of their XP licensed vendors
simply ignore their customers wanting to upgrade to SP2?

And if MS knows, why are they still selling XP to these vendors?

MS provides the support for software and the vendors support the hardware

Just think !!! What happens if MS decides to go into hardware as well

another suit for being a monopolist ???

You seem to be misunderstanding the issue.

MS sells XP licenses to PC manufacturers
who *do not support SP2 on machines that are barely 2 y.o.

(ie: the hardware vendor does not supply SP2 compatible drivers
for their OEM propriety hardware)

and what has MS got to do with the hardware?

MS welcomes vendors to submit drivers for testing at MS's cost but most
vendors cannot be bother................................

"what if a vendor doesn't..."
That is entirely up to the vender.
If your vender will not support your hardware, find a vender who will.
Drivers are not and can not be Microsoft's responsibility.
Whether Microsoft supports a Service Pack or not has no bearing on if a
vender supports their hardware.
Those are two separate things and not connected.

Also did you look at the link in my last post concerning support for SP-2?

Basically, I was assuming SP2 contained countless updated hardware
drivers, written or provided by MS

If the company that build the PC does not provide SP2 compatible propriety
software patches that are needed to get SP2 deployed
(many brands did offer them)
the customer is stuck with SP1.

MS is not responsable for drivers,
but still, they might take a second look
at selling OEM XP licenses
when a PC supplier has a history of
not supporting a major service pack.

As another victim with a Medion PC,
I wonder why MS is still licensing it's XP OEM to
a company that blatently leaves their customers in the cold.

It's quite bad PR, not to mention all the frustrated
consumers....

Pat,

unfortunately some OEMs couldn't care less about MSFT
"Driver Development Kits, seminars, and Technet bulletins"
when it comes to developing SP2 comparible drivers.

Several API's actually no longer work with some uncertified drivers due
to the nature of SP2, it is basically a major OS upgrade, not a simple sp.

Some OEMs seem to have found a new way of generating sales:
by not provided necessary propriety driver updates
many PCs simply cannot be updated/graded to SP2.

And indeed, those OEMs are the ones to blame.
