Microsoft Update broken in Vista?

I have installed Windows Vista Ultimate OEM - Swedish.

Basically, with Microsoft Update enabled/installed NO updates are available.
No critical, no recommended, no optional... NONE.

If I uncheck Microsoft Update in the settings then updates show up
(critical, recommended and optional).

Isn't Vista supposed to be more secure? Now if I enable all options (read:
Windows Update) then it will no longer download and install any updates???

What is this, a problem with Ultimate OEM? With Swedish language version?

I only discovered this since Windows Defender no loger downloaded updates,
it only reported the obscure error 0x80240029 or something like which
translates to "invalid license".

Anyone else having this problem?

OK, *might* have found the reason...

I have Office 2007 installed, not activated yet.

So when Microsoft Update checks for updates, it sees that indeed, I have a
non-valid version of Office (since it's not activated) and so it aborts ALL
update-checks. Even those for Windows (which *is* activated).

Bummer.

If this is indeed the reason (sounds likely) I can live with it for another
week until my registration key arrives in the mail.

However, it shouldn't stop me from seeing and downloading updates for Windows!

Hi.

I have this problem also but I'm running Home Premium and Office 2007
(Engish - both activated). I too searched for solutions after getting the
0x80240029 error in Defender. It seems that the solution is simply disabling
Microsoft Update - as soon as you do this Defender update works fine and also
any other Windows updates appear (if any available).

So, in the meantime, leaving Microsoft Update disabled seems to be the only
solution until MS release a fix.
