Microsoft Update Delivery Method

I am curious to know how the new Microsoft Update package delivers the
updates, hotfixes, etc? Are the all MSI packages, or do some of the updates
have a .exe extension on them? I ask about this because we are blocking all
..exe from our network and unfortunately this is effecting the Windows Update
downloads.

Most of the updates have a .exe file extension name...
