Microsoft Update does nothing

All I get is the runaround. First, I get a page that tells me I need to
upgrade to Microsoft Update. I did. Then, it checks for a new ActiveX.
Then, I get a page with a single "Check for Updates" button. All
that button does is take me to the first page.

Frankly, where is the "Custom" button? Was that dropped? I prefer it
as it checks for more than just critical updates.
