I get the same problem, please let me know when find a solution.
The only thing I did was install office 2007 beta. Since then it stopped
working. Not sure if that has anything to with it.

I get the same message, I can go to start+ my computer+Harddrive C+ windows+
software distribution and delete all the files inside the folders, I can get
windows update to work, but if I try the microsoft update at the top of the
windows update webpage, I get the error again, and windows will not work
either until I do the cleaning of the files, all is fine unless I try the
microsoft update,
you can also try
-- To work around this problem, follow these steps:1. Click Start, click
Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. At the command prompt, type net stop wuauserv, and then press ENTER.
3. Type rmdir /s %windir%\softwaredistribution\wuredir, and then press ENTER.
4. Type net start wuauserv.
I can do this and it works unless I try Microsoft update. driving me crazy

Getting same ERROR:
1. Did have Ofc 2007 (Beta) Installed.
2. Tried rmdir /s .... , didn't work.
3. Have OPEN Problem w/ MS, report when (If) resolved.

Just got home from work, I had a reply from Microsoft, I am getting ready to
see if this works, I will show you what I have, even if it does not help
mine, it might help someone,I hope it works,
1. Rename the Update temporary folders.
===================================
1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following
command in the opened window.

Net stop WuAuServ

2. Click Start, Run, type: %windir% and press Enter.
3. In the opened folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to Sdold.
4. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following
command in the opened window.

Net start WuAuServ

2. Remove the corrupted Active X control
=====================================
1. Open Interent Options
2. On the General Tab choose Settings under Temporary Internet Files
3. Then click on View Objects.
4. Right Click WuWebControl Class and choose remove
5. Right Click MuWebControl Class and choose remove
6. Delete the file c:\windows\system32\wuweb.dll
7. Delete the file c:\windows\system32\muweb.dll

The above steps will help us remove the ActiveX controls for Windows Update
and Microsoft Update. Then will download a new one to instead of the
corrupted one.

Awesome! it worked, I have tried alot of fixes from Microsoft and this forum,
this was my 7th email fix from Mike a
Microsoft Windows Update Support Professional, and let me tell you he has
stuck right there with me, trying different things, even replied that he
would stick with me until issue is resolved, so I hope this will help someone
else as I have been trying to fix this issue for 17 days now, I hope it helps
some else.
1. Rename the Update temporary folders.
===================================
1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following
command in the opened window.

Net stop WuAuServ

2. Click Start, Run, type: %windir% and press Enter.
3. In the opened folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to Sdold.
4. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following
command in the opened window.

Net start WuAuServ

2. Remove the corrupted Active X control
=====================================
1. Open Interent Options
2. On the General Tab choose Settings under Temporary Internet Files
3. Then click on View Objects.
4. Right Click WuWebControl Class and choose remove
5. Right Click MuWebControl Class and choose remove
6. Delete the file c:\windows\system32\wuweb.dll
7. Delete the file c:\windows\system32\muweb.dll

The above steps will help us remove the ActiveX controls for Windows Update
and Microsoft Update. Then will download a new one to instead of the
corrupted one.
