Microsoft Update Errors

After Microsoft Update scans my computer for needed updates, it shows me on
the left side panel all available updates. Whenever I click on anything in
that panel, the main right window will relaunch a new session of Microsoft
Update within that tiny frame. Thus and endless cycle of MS Update. This is
really fustrating. Is there a setting in my browser perhaps that is causing
this? Or something?

Windows version? IE version?

How to troubleshoot Windows Update, Microsoft Update, and Windows Server
Update Services installation issues:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=906602

1. See the "Need more help? Tell us what problem you are having" section of
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=ph;en-us;6527

2. You cannot install some updates or programs
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;822798

3a. Check Windowsupdate.log (%windir%\Windowsupdate.log) for errors
associated with the download/install.

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=902093

3b. Compare errors to those listed here:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/archive...date_codes.htm and/or go to
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com > click on Help and Support link in left
pane > Solve problems on your own.

Should also state all those help pages fix symptoms of actual problems
downloading the updates themselves. I can update the patches and such just
fine via the Automatic Updater. The real problem is how the frames are
handled within the browser for Microsoft Update that messes up. Whenever I
visit Microsoft Update and it lists the available updates on the left hand
side. Whenever I click on them it reopens a new instance of Microsoft Update
within that right side frame when it should be showing the update information
that I clicked for. It creates an endless loop of MS Update cycles.

Found the answer to my problem. Found out certain ActiveX browser objects
installed by other software can cause Microsoft Update to act buggy.

In my particular case, BitComet 0.84 was the cause of the problem but if you
don't have that particular piece of software installed then it's possible
that a Browser Helper Object from another piece of software is the cause of
your problem. To find out which BHO might be causing your problem, do the
following (this is assuming you're running IE6 or IE7 in Windows XP
SP2...previous versions of XP and/or IE may differ)...

1) Open Internet Explorer
2) Select Tools -> Internet Options
3) Select the 'Programs' tab
4) Click the 'Manage add-ons' button
5) Select 'Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer' in the dropdown
6) Select each item in turn that has a Type of 'Browser Helper Object' and
disable it
7) Click OK
8) Start Windows Update (or Microsoft Update) and click the 'Custom' button
9) When the list of updates appear, you should now be able to select the
"Software, Optional" or "Hardware, Optional" without problems
