Microsoft Update Fails at Download Stage (Win 2000)

Hi:

After scanning a few posts in this newsgroup, I discovered the
existence of the WindowsUpdate.log file, but I need assistance
interpreting its contents.

For many months, I have successfully updated an older notebook
running Windows 2000. The July updates installed without incident,
and the system was not used until I went to check for August
updates.

There are six critical updates at the Microsoft Update web site, and
the steps proceed okay until the downloads begin. Each download
status ends with "Download Failed" instead of "Done!".

What follows below my signature is what I think to be the applicable
section of the WindowsUpdate.log file. Does this information tell
any readers what I should try next? (Note: I cut out some lines
that are simply three additional attempts to resume each download
ending with a notice that no more attempts will be made, and
replaced them with < snip >.)

Thanks a lot,

~ Mark

That's a time out error, the server cannot be reached.

Installing the Root Certificates update may resolve the issue.

Hi Freudi:

Thanks for your post.

I retried four times over the past three days, and the issue
remains.

On the last attempt today, I took another Windows 2000 laptop that
has not been used for a few months, and I tried to update both
systems side-by-side while they accessed the Internet using the same
network. The old laptop updated without incident, but the
problematic one still failed at the download stage with the same
error in the log file.

Since both machines used the same network and were at Microsoft
Update at the same time, I'm thinking something is wrong with the
computer's data.

I looked at the KB link that you suggested, but it instructs to use
Microsoft Update, and that download fails, too. Is there another
way to update the Root Certificates, or do you have any other
suggestions?

Thanks,

~ Mark

The download of what? The Windows Update Client or the Root Certificates?

> Is there another way to update the Root Certificates,

Direct download URL for Windows 2000:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/ms...8765c13165.exe

Hi Freudi:

The resolution in KB924123 instructs to update the root certificates
using the Microsoft Update web site. That did not succeed.

Tomorrow, I will try the second URL that you provided.

Thanks!

~ Mark

PS: I'm not sure what "Windows Update Client" means. Is this
another name for the Microsoft Update web site?

Did it work?

Windows Update Client = Windows Update Agent.

In the end, it did not work.

I used the URL.

I downloaded the file rootsupd_d54d141df0fb4e29d557f8765c13165.exe.

When I try to execute this file, nothing happens.

I deleted the file and retried; I got the same result.

That's normal, there's nothing *obvious* happening installing the
Root Certificates.

Did you reboot Windows?

This is stupid. I've posted my reply twice; the last time was
09-06-2007 at 0248 hours PT. This time, I'm going to paste the text
into this post.

----------------

Hi Freudi:

I cannot agree that it's normal for a Microsoft update to complete
in the absence of any output whatsoever. Show me a Microsoft
developer who codes end-user software that provides no information
for the user, and I'll show you somebody who may be categorized as
being lazy, not giving a sh!t, or anticipating no need to use such
programs personally.

By the way, when I wrote that nothing happens, I really mean
nothing. No hard-drive activity, no changes in the mouse pointer,
absolutely nothing visual or audible.

Back to the matter at hand, yes, I shut down the computer both times
after I tried to execute that file.

Subsequently, the download failures still occur at the Microsoft
Update web site, and I still get the same error code in
windowsupdate.log.

~ Mark
