Hey Bill,
I have had the same problem for well over a year now on one PC, I have
tried numerous fixes but nothing works and there is very little info
on this particular problem that is of any use. Mine will download all
the updates then fail installation.
My workaround is to go into the Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Downloads
folder, and look through the latest folders for the KB I am after then
run the installer.exe manually from there.
The M$ fix is to run the scannow file check or do a repair install
which is fair enough and will no doubt work however I have avoided
that route so I do not get all the M$ bloatware (Messenger - MSN
Explorer etc) stuff I have removed back again.
If you do use the workaround method to install your updates either
move the contents of the Software Distribution folder elsewhere before
using update to get the new KBs (there will only be this months in the
folder then) or use search and point it at the Software Distribution
folder looking for KBXXXXX
Otherwise get your critical updates here

Already onto SUSE 9.0 / 10.0, been running SUSE on several PCs for the
best part of a year now, steep learning curve but well worth the
effort. Windows Vista.................No chance enough is enough. I
will run1 XP installation on my gaming machine in future, thats it.
