Microsoft Update Keeps Scanning For Updates....

....and doesn't end.

I've already gone through the re-registering of all applicable WU*.DLL
components - rebooted - and it's still not fixed.

Anybody have any ideas on how to fix this continuous scanning that never ends?

Are there any pop-up/cookie blockers/download managers/or tool bars
installed ?
Which, and/or how many firewalls are being used ?

Hi...

Everything was working fine until very recently.

I have:

AVG 8.0 security suite

Spyware Doctor

Spyware Blaster

And I run a number of cleaners / registry cleaners / disk defrags / registry
defrags.

Again, even with all of this, everything was working fine - and for some
reason, now, windows update just keeps scanning.

What other information can I give you?

Running Windows XP Home - SP2 - fully updated, as of recently.

Andy,

Initiate a manual visit to Microsoft Update via the Start Menu link or
open Internet Explorer, click Tools, Microsoft [or, Windows] Update.
If the scan never completes, close IE.
Now go to Start > Run > type or copy&paste the below into the Open: line

%windir%\windowsupdate.log
Click OK or press Enter

The WindowsUpdate.log will now be open.
Scroll all the way to the bottom.
Copy and paste the last 50 or so lines into your reply, please.

I've never seen this error. It could possibly be caused by a .dll file
being called to intialize COM in an improper order. IOW, another .dll
would need to be called prior.

A couple of theories:

1) muweb.dll may need to be updated or registered.
Suggest you *not* have Internet Explorer open when you do this -

Open Internet Options in the Control Panel
Click the Programs tab
Click the Manage Add-ons button
Next to Show: should be " Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer "
Under Name look for ' MUWebControl Class '
Under Status it should show Enabled
Click on MUWebControl Class to highlight it
Now click the Update ActiveX bottom towards the bottom right of the window
If it needs updating you'll get a notification to Allow the software
installation.
Close the Internet Properties window now.

You know the registration drill <w>

regsvr32 muweb.dll

Now see if the system can access MU
If no joy, read on ...

2) IIRC, AVG 8.0 Security Suite contains a firewall. Is that the
firewall currently being used ? If so, suggest you temp disable it and
enable the native XP firewall. Be sure and disable any Service that the
firewall may being running. This may require a restart of the system.
Consult AVG's Help File or web site to learn how to totally disable
their firewall so that we can see if it's the cause of this issue.

Once you've done that, see if the system can access MU
If no joy again, open Spyware Doctor and see if it offers protection
against malicious ActiveX objects. If it does, make sure that it is not
interfering with or preventing the install of the ActiveX objects
required to communicate with the MS update sites.

I'm not opted in to MU so I can't tell if this entry is an indication of
where the error lies:

We'll reserve judgement on whether some malware may possibly be

Thanks so much for the time and help!

After starting on things you wrote about, I finally decided it might be
easier for me to load down a full system restore from my external drive,
going back about 10 days (but saving new docs, Outlook, etc.).

That did the trick.

I think what screwed me up was using one of these "junk file" removers that
removed various uninstall info, including related to Windows Update. It's a
case of live and learn, and I will know very well not to uninstall anything
like that again.
