Microsoft Update needs an urgent fix!

When Microsoft is gonna fix Microsoft Update? I can't update my fresh Windows
XP Professional SP2 installation, I'm lucky that it has the SP2 already but
there is a lot of patches post SP2 that are necesary to download, not to
mention other optional things too.

This sure is getting really annoying, the scanning bar on the Microsoft
Update site goes on and on and on but no answer except a full usage of the
CPU between the processes iexplorer.exe and svchost.exe (this one under the
username system) the process wuauclt.exe remains in 0 CPU use.

I have been checking the WindowsUpdate.log file and there is a lot of errors
found, here is the part of the log when I tried to update through the

I just installed the latest windows installer but that didn't made any
difference, the scanning bar on the windows update site goes on and on and on
but no response and the CPU usage keeps going high, still a week ago was
working fine for me, it delayed during the scanning but it did showed the
updates and didn't hogged all the CPU usage.

please check the windows update site, I'm sure the error is there, you have
to take in count that a lot of users still have not too fast computers mostly
in places outside the US.

About the installer before when I went to the Windows Update site it
appeared there as the first thing to download along with the Windows Genuine
Advantage Validation Tool and after install those two things you could
continue with the rest of the updates but now I cannot even download the
Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool.

I really appreciate that you could check the Windows Update site, there is a
lot of complains here on the board.

Are you trying to get all the post SP2 updates - 50 or 60 I think, or just
the latest lot.
There is a slowdown for certain. I have had it and so have others. Too
many trying to get the downloads at the same time or something.
I was surprised to see how many have chosen this moment to update from SP1
to SP2.
I will try in a day or two when I have figured out which ones do not cause
download probs. Have not found many yet.
I bet Lxxxx users are having a good laugh.

Actually it were 55.

Well I already managed to get them and even got the optional software too
but man it sure took me a lot to get them and not because the download was
slow but because the site wasn't responding during days, again I was lucky
that I already had SP2 installed since my Windows XP CD is the one with SP2
integrated so at least I had a fresh installation with SP2.

But I agree with you in that there is a big slowdown and is causing the CPU
usage on the computers that aren't too recent to go high, I understand
Windows Update needs some CPU usage but not at that edge.

But well at least I already have my Windows XP with all the updates.

If you revert back to Windows Update, these problems are venting away?
Are you using a PC with Nvidia chipset? In case you're, try updating
the chipset drivers, especially those for the IDE controller.

Thanks MowGreen for the press article. Hopefully, MS are also aware of the
problem and are working on a permanent solution.

Got my computer all back up and running and more importantly working with
the update services. My computer has been experiencing problems for months
and now I know some of that was due to the automatic update service! The
difference in speed and processor activity has reduce significantly - the
laptop is actually the coolest it has been for months.

In the meantime a search for roundtrip on this discussion group then look at
the "installation failure on updates" thread will reveal my suggestions so
far that worked for me and look to be working for others.
