Microsoft Update will not work, Windows Update does

I am running XP SP2, and have no problems using Windows Update to
automatically get and install updates, and Office Update to manually get and
install updates.

If I try to upgrade to Microsoft Update, it will successfully run the first
time, but every subsequent attempt to manually request updates results in the
browser sitting at "Seaching for Updates" with the progress bar cycling, but
no disk or network activity.

I regularly maintain my registry with Register Booster 2, and it is clean.
I have tried to use MS update several times over the years, and each time
have had to revert to Windows update by renaming the
C:\WINNT\SoftwareDistribution folder in safe mode, and having Windows Update
reinstall. This works, but is far less convenient since I have to manually
request Office updates.

How can I get MS Update to work correctly?

Stop using Registry Booster 2, for one.

Think your Registry needs "cleaning" or "repairing"? Read
http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=28099 and draw your own conclusions.

This is not related to my post. You may want to post it as a new topic.

I haven't tried the trial package, so have no suggestion. Typically if you
download sw, you have the option of specifying a directory to save the file,
or instal it directly from the download site. You could always go to the
download site and retry the download/install. If nothing else, when you get
the run/save dialog box, you can identify the name of the file and search
your drive for it.

PA Bear -

Thanks for the reg cleaning background. I am aware of the tradeoffs, but
had ~1500 registry problems and some intermittent system issues. Reduced
those to 20 shared DLL issues, which I simply added to the ignore list
(adhering to the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" and diminishing return
laws).

RB2 does do a full registry backup prior to making any changes, and hasn't
created any instabilities.

Any insights you can share on the MS update issue?

Regards,

Howard

I'd first use those backups to return the Registry to its state prior to
ever running RB2. If no joy...

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

Support for Windows Update:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/wusupport

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with
security updates and Windows/Microsoft Update issues.

For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary
for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web
site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available through
your usual support contacts.

PS: Injudicious use of HijackThis can cause such issues, too.

Pa Bear -

Thanks for the addtional information. When I tried entering a support
incident report before, I got to a payment page. Will try this url and let
you know what happens.

This problem has been an issue for >2 years, and I just got RB2 this month,
so this doesn't appear to be related.

Never have used HijackThis.

Regards,

Howard
