Microsoft Update Slow in Response

In the recent 2 to 3 months, I've run into serious problems with Microsoft
Update responding timely whenever I manually chose to let it run--I have
WinXP Home, SP2. I know Microsoft Update is updating in the background
whenever I am online--I've set Windows Automatic Updates to automatically
download the updates without installing them. But I want to know WHY
Microsoft Update is SO slow when I manually chose to let it run? The Windows
Update progress bar just slides to and fro--for a LONG, LONG time(sometimes
about 20 minutes or so), without any response!

Spyware on my machine? Possible! But I've run Windows Defender with the
latest definitions on my machine; no spyware has turned up!

Anyone else has experienced the same problem, or has any idea on why this is
occurring?

Many thanks in advance.

It is not uncommon for "the process" on the website for MS Win Update or MS Update to be very s-l-o-w. Even when connected via cable modem. You ( and I also) notice that the green progress bar takes forever. I have not actually timed mine. But it is a significant number of minutes. Not exactly sure why, but one thing is "the process" has to check what updates you already have & then figure out what new updates your system needs. On top of that, their is "network contention" or traffic delays, if you will, on the internet.
For example, on cable connection all my neighbors are also hitting my ISP to get their movies, while I'm running updates.
You get the picture. That scenario is not applicable if one has DSL connection --- but then you have to account for heavy traffic at MS website.

On spyware/malware: use a multi-program defense in depth approach to keep malware out.
Keep your antivirus up-to-date, use a firewall, use anti-spyware utilities.

Hey, thanks for the info! Will think about the tips you have given here. I
have to say that the slow response in Windows Update has really ticked me
off! I also have Lavasoft Adware on my machine in addition to Windows
Defender, btw. What puzzled me, however, is that before the recent two or
three months, I did NOT experience the slow response of Windows Update when I
chose to manually run the Microsoft Update!!! What gives??? Of course, I
have taken into account all the traffic problem that you have mentioned in
your reply!

My case is a special case--I should point out. Police or the power
structure in this country has me completely bugged--from my computers to my
cars to my person, everywhere. I have started to wonder if they are
interefering with--preventing--my Windows Update so as to exploit the
vulnerabilities of my Windows operating system to do something to my machine!

This is NOT a paranoid statement, btw. I am the only Chinese Aqaeda in this
world!

Thanks for the reply!
