Why is Microsoft Update offering Via Primary & Secondary IDE Channel update
to someone who doesn't use VIA?

I inadvertently took it as I was distracted at the time and my machine
immediately became unbootable.
Thank God I managed to get into the F8 menu and pick "Last known good
configuration".

Reference: VIA - Storage - Primary IDE Channel
Date last published: 2/16/2007
VIA Storage software update released in June, 2006
System Requirements
Recommended CPU: Not specified.
Recommended memory: Not specified.
Recommended hard disk space: Not specified.

Hi there,

Never take MS updates for drivers unless you like problems take them from
the manufacturers site IF REALLY NEEDED.

Best regards,
Michel Denie

And what if they already did?

I've a client who just called me with the same problem...only this idiot had
disabled the System Restore for some reason. Now he has no rollback option.

Anyone know where I can get him a set of older drivers?

Roll back on the driver

Download if needed from the manufacturers website.

Not what Microsoft says --

Their site says "The best place to start is the Microsoft Windows Update
Web site:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com)
Click Scan for updates in the left column, and then click Driver Updates."

and

"If you cannot find the driver that you require on the Windows Update
Web site, you can check your hardware manufacturer's Web site."

and

"Remember that some drivers that are available on manufacturer Web sites
may not have passed Microsoft compatibility testing and might damage
your computer."

I just checked, and MS Update is offering me the "Alps Pointing-device"
for my Dell Dimension 4800 PC. I don't even know what an "Alps" is, let
alone have one.

But I am not an IDIOT -- I would never install a MS offered driver on my
computer. BECAUSE I RUINED MY WINDOWS 98 COMPUTER THAT WAY. (Shouting
intentional).

Rollback didn't work, nor did downloading and installing the original drivers.

Is there any way to determine the exact file names and registry entries that
the VIA IDE update put in? I can walk through and manually remove them, and
allow it to only find the ones I provide if i know what these defective ones
are.

Do you even read the posts before you reply, or do you just reply to hear
yourself talk?

As I stated earlier, the System Restore option had been disabled.

You know, you really aren't much help. All you seem to do is go around
telling people they shouldn't have done what they did, and to read other
posts for solutions.

If you aren't going to contribute to the solutions, stop wasting our time.

Do you get some sort of prize for a big post count or something?

If you take your own advice and read you could trying to remove the update
under installed software, without wasting my time.

I do not get paid or get bonusses, just putting some valued time in trying
to help people and no no need to say thanks for trying.

You could use a driver cleaner and remove the audio drivers for via.

So hope you read better this time and stop pretending like you know it all
so well, if that was the fact you would have solved the problem yourself i
guess.
