Microsoft Update vs. Windows Update

Hi,

In my last weeks of using XP I remember coming accross 'Microsoft Update'
which was branded differently to 'Windows Update' and claimed to perform
updates for all manner of Microsoft applications (i.e. Office). The address
was http://update.microsoft.com, if I try to navigate there now I get
redirected to the Vista update control panel screen, which is all 'Windows
Update' branded.

Is there a difference between these two update services and if so, why can't
I access Microsoft Update from Vista?

Regards,

Seb

If you start Windows Update from the Start menu and go to 'change
settings' you can select Microsoft Update by checking the box at the
bottom under 'Update Service'.

I feel the identification could have been better. The difference is as
you describe.

Windows Update updates Windows and core components [i.e. Windows
Defender, Windows Media Player, Windows Messenger, etc.]
Microsoft Update offers updates for all MS software that is installed
plus Windows and core components. [i.e. MS Office, Windows LIVE
Messenger, Windows LIVE Mail (or whatever it's called today),etc.]
