Microsoft Update in Windows XP SP2 fails

I am not able to get any of my remaining updates to successfully complete.

I had to manually install Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474)
just to get it to install at all. Now, it doesn't show up as an option in
Microsoft Update.

I still have definitions for Windows Defender remaining to be installed. I
also have Update for Microsoft Core XML Services (MSXML) 6.0 Service Pack 1
(KB934268) left to be installed.

Everything finishes downloading in Microsoft Update but everything ends up
failing. The installations never initialize.

Any ideas on how I can proceed ?

For the Windows Defender definition issue, please go here:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/default.aspx

Under 'Latest Versions', click the 32bit Definitions or 64bit
Definitions link, depending on which is installed.
Save mpas-fe.exe
When the download is complete, close the browser and then run
mpas-fe.exe

For KB934268, go here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Download msxml6_x86.msi [if the system is 32 bit; if it's 64 bit, then
download msxml6_x64.msi]
When the download is finished, then double click msxml6_x86.msi
IF three options are presented, Modify / Repair /Remove, choose REMOVE
Restart the system afterwards if REMOVE was used or presented as an option

IF three options are NOT presented then install KB934268

If the installation should fail there will be a log file that may
contain clues as to why. It will either be in the WINDOWS directory
[folder] and be named KB934268.log or, a randomly named folder will be
created on the root drive, usually C:\.
Open it and the log contained within.
Post back with the contents of the log, please.

Hello MowGreen [MVP],

I thank you for your suggestions. They seem to have worked nicely to
install those updates.

After I installed the updates I openned up Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) & did a
Custom check for Microsoft Updates. Here's what it gave me (all critical
updates):

Update for Windows XP (KB930916)
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - May 2007 (KB890830)
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB931768)
Security Update for Excel 2007 (KB934670)
Security Update for Office 2007 (KB933688)
Security Update for Office 2007 (KB934062)
Update for Office 2007 (KB934393)
Update for Outlook 2007 Junk Email Filter (KB934655)
Update for Word 2007 (KB934173)
Security Update for CAPICOM (KB931906)

They all downloaded just fine but right as the installation tries to
initialize it fails. ALL of the installations fail.

Something is interfering with Microsoft Update's ability to do its job
(install updates on my computer).

Any ideas on how to proceed ?

Thank you for your time.

You're mowst welcome, M0rpheu$
Please post the last 50 or so lines of the WindowsUpdate.log, located in
the WINDOWS directory [folder], into your reply and we'll proceed from
there.

Ok, for some reason Automatic Updates seemed to resolved it's issues on its
own. Today when I went to manually check for updates there weren't any
available.

In case you might locate any reason as to why the installations weren't
initializing a week ago I have included the last 50 lines of May 2nd's logs.
I have NO CLUE which lines are important and which lines are not. I hope
this helps.

Anyways, if this isn't the info you need just let me know. For now, I know
it is working. I wouldn't mind knowing what caused the issue and any steps
that could lead to a resolution next time should this issue recur.

Thank you for your time.

M0rpheu$,

Glad to hear that the system healed itself <w> These errors in the WU
log are the 'culprits' -

0x800704DD Error_Not_Logged_On to network

There is a Knowledge Base article with both errors *featured*:

Not sure if that was the cause or it was just related to the latest
version of the Windows Update Agent that is being released/installed.
IF the issue should appear again, suggest you employ the steps laid out
in the KB article.
